Throughout the article, Daum conveys her tone in a derisive, caustic, and comical way. By starting her article with eleven different questions on why individuals choose to send E-cards really gives off a derisive tone. Daum also calls out that while people may be trying to be ecofriendly, they still drive “tank- sized SUVs” which is also showing her derisive tone. Daum expresses her caustic tone by saying “[Her] quaint efforts to send out paper holiday cards with personal messages, [she] probably discard[s] one for every three [she] actually manage[s] to put in the mail.” This sentence holds the most caustic tone in the whole article and the audience can imagine the way an individual would be saying that in person and how strong the sarcasm would be. Lastly, Daum expresses a comedic tone through her comments on people’s handwriting. Daum says that people’s handwriting has gotten worse, so “Merry Christmas” looks like “Hurry Chipmunk”, and what says holiday spirit more than that?
