In the article, Daum begins with explaining her reasoning for writing a piece on her opinion of privilege. She said that someone said that she was only successful due to her parents’ high economic standings. She affectively began with an example of first hand experience dealing with the insult, which appeals to both the audiences’ emotions and her credibility. They feel bad for her that she’s upset about this and they know she’s not talking about something she has never experienced. In the middle of her argument she discusses politics and alludes to a Buzzfeed quiz and a old checklist developed in the 1980’s by a feminist. All these concepts appeal to the readers’ logic. She backs up her ideas with other’s ideas, helping a reader to believe what she is saying. She ends her argument with a quote she agrees with: “Everyone has a combination of unearned advantage and unearned disadvantage in life… and it changes minute by minute, depending on where we are, who we’re seeing, or what we’re required to do.” By closing her article with that quote, she leaves the readers in deep thought about the article and makes them think about all her strong points. Overall, Daum made a very strong argument; privilege should not be an insult and everyone is at a disadvantage or an advantage at some points in their life.
